Cooling Tower Worm Gearbox Overhaul

A client in the distilling industry approached our engineering repair center with a worn and underperforming work gearbox from a cooling tower application. As a vital part of their process cooling system, the unit’s reliability was essential for maintaining smooth production operations. The gearbox needed a full strip-down, thorough assessment, and complete refurbishment to meet the high standards required in a continuous-process environment.

Our Approach

The project began with a complete disassembly of he gearbox, followed by deep cleaning and inspection of all components. A detailed condition report was produced, which revealed significant wear on the output shaft diameters. To address this, we carried out a precision repair using Diatec 1060, followed by finish grinding to restore the shaft dimensions and surface finish to OEM standards. In parallel, we sourced and installed new bearings and seals, ensuring the unit would run smoothly and efficiently once returned to service. All components were handled with care and aligned meticulously during reassembly.

Testing and Finishing

Once rebuilt, the gearbox underwent a full functional test. This included checks for alignment, smooth gear operation, noise levels, and overall mechanical integrity. Upon passing all performance checks, the unit received a durable protective paint finish, ensuring resistance to environmental exposure in the cooling tower setup.

The Outcome

The completed repair delivered a fully restored gearbox, now performing to specification and ready for long-term, reliable service in a demanding industrial environment. The client was able to reintegrate the unit without delay, confident in the quality of the repair and the performance of their cooling system.
