Industry: Energy Sector
Project Duration: 12 Weeks
Component: Spur ring Gear – 157T, 14MOD, 2226mm OD
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Lamond & Murray DEXIS was selected by a client in the energy sector to support the manufacture of a large-scale winch component—specifically, a spur ring gear used in critical lifting equipment. With a lead time of 12 weeks, the job required precision gear cutting on an impressive scale, and the customer trusted our team to deliver.
THE PROBLEM
The client needed a 157-tooth, 14MOD spur gear with a 2226mm outside diameter—a significant engineering challenge requiring specialist equipment and experienced machinists. Not many facilities can accommodate gear cutting on this scale, let alone with the required accuracy and reliability.
THE SOLUTION
Lamond & Murray DEXIS completed the job using our No. 27 Sunderland gear planer, capable of handling components over 2 metres in diameter. This machine was ideal for executing precise tooth profiles across the full ring gear circumference.
The process included:
– Secure setup and fixturing of the large ring gear blank
– Precision gear cutting to 157 teeth, 14MOD
– Final inspection to confirm dimensional accuracy and gear tooth alignment
WHAT MADE THIS PROJECT STAND OUT
This project demonstrated our in-house ability to gear cut components over 2 metres in diameter, a capability few workshops can offer. The size, complexity, and accuracy of the ring gear reflect the strength of our large-component handling and gear machining expertise.
THE RESULT
The gear was delivered on time, to spec, and fully compliant with the client’s requirements. Following successful installation and performance in the field, the customer has since placed repeat orders for the same component—a strong endorsement of our quality, value, and reliability.
