Industry: Steel Manufacturing
Project Duration: 13 Weeks
Component: Output Mill Pinion Shells – Coil Temper Mill Main Drive Gearbox
LAMOND & MURRAY DEXIS recently completed the precision grinding and keyway cutting of double helical output pinion shells for a coil temper mill used in the steel industry, As a critical part of the main drive gearbox, these components play a vital role in the performance and reliability of heavy-duty rolling operations.
THE SCOPE OF WORK
The project involved gear grinding of 58-tooth, 12 MOD double helical pinions on our high-performance p1480G profile gear grinding machine. This required precise alignment and control to meet tight dimensional and surface quality tolerances specified by the customer. In addition to gear grinding, our team machined a 2.5-inch wide internal keyway through a 432mm long bore using our advanced Fromag keyseating machine. The size and depth of the keyway, combined with the component’s length, presented a significant technical challenge – one that was met with precision and efficiency.
WHAT MADE THIS PROJECT STAND OUT
This job highlighted LAMOND & MURRAY DEXIS to:
- Grind double helical gears to customer-defined quality grades
- Accommodate a wide range of helix angles using advanced gear grinding technology
- Cut oversized internal keyways in long components without compromising on accuracy
By leveraging in-house expertise and state-of-the-art machinery, we ensured both the gear flanks and keyways met exact specifications, delivering a high-quality finished product.
