Component: Second Reduction Pinion Shaft – 16” Mill
Lamond & Murray recently completed the manufacture of a high-specification second reduction pinion shaft for a 16” mill within the steel industry. This critical component plays a vital role in power transmission for heavy-duty rolling operations, and its performance directly impacts mill efficiency and product quality.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
the customer required a custom-engineered pinion shaft manufactured precisely to their drawing and technical specifications. the part featured 18 helical teeth, with a 12 Module pitch and a 20° pressure angle – cut right-hand helical. the material of choice was case hardened steel, offering strength and durability for high-torque applications. Once hardened, the shaft and to meet exacting tolerances and gear quality standards through precision machining and grinding.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Our engineering team carried out a full suite of operations in-house, including:
- Turning, milling, drilling, and reaming performed on our multi-capable P5100LYB lathe/mill
- Gear grinding using our P1480G grinder, where material was removed from the flanks of the teeth post-hardening to meet the required quality grade
- Span measurement and final inspection to ensure the gear tooth form and shaft alignment met all dimensional requirements
All machining steps were executed to tight tolerances and validated through thorough inspection at every stage.
FINISHING AND DELIVERY
To ensure the component arrived in perfect condition, the finished shaft was packaged in a custom-built wooden transport case. This level of care prevents damage during handling and reflects our commitment to quality throughout the entire process.
