Lamond & Murray DEXIS recently completed a high-priority gearbox overhaul for a major paper manufacturer. The job was driven by the risk of a critical failure in the plant’s in-service gearbox—an event that would have caused significant production downtime. To mitigate this risk, the customer urgently requested the refurbishment of a spare gearbox, with the clear goal of returning it to operation within a one-week window.
Project Overview
Though the gearbox was not currently in service, the client had growing concerns about the operational integrity of the active unit. in the event of failure, downtime could result in a costly halt to production. To stay ahead of the risk, the plant sent in its spare gearbox for immediate overhaul. Alongside the unit, the customer also provided spare gears, shafts, and bearings as free-issue parts, allowing our team to act quickly without delay in sourcing replacements.
The Solution
Once received at our facility, the gearbox was fully stripped and assessed. It quickly became clear that both the gears and shafts would require replacement. Fortunately, the spare parts provided were in good condition. Our engineers dressed the gears and carefully matched them to the new shafts before installation.
The gearbox was then rebuilt using the customer-supplied bearings and seals, and the unit was fully tested. Due to the urgent turnaround, there no time for painting, but operational integrity and reliability were fully validated. the complete overhaul was finished and returned to the customer within just six days ahead of the one-week deadline
