Industry: Manufacturing
Project Duration: 1 Week
Component: Industrial Gearbox – Output Shaft & Coupling Repair
PROJECT OVERVIEW
manufacturing client faced a tight, high-stakes deadline: a full gearbox strip-down, repair, and return—all within a 1-week shutdown window. The gearbox had sustained damage to the output shaft’s keyway, resulting in the output coupling being welded directly onto the shaft to keep production running. With operations paused and the clock ticking, Lamond & Murray DEXIS was called in to make it right.
THE PROBLEM
The damaged keyway rendered the output shaft unusable, and the welded coupling complicated disassembly. To remove the shaft from the gearbox, it had to be cut—making a replacement shaft essential. However, due to lead-time constraints, manufacturing a brand-new coupling wasn’t an option.
THE SOLUTION
Lamond & Murray took full ownership of the project in-house, executing the following steps:
– Stripped and assessed the gearbox
– Cut and removed the damaged output shaft
– Reverse-engineered and machined a new shaft to suit the existing coupling bore
– Modified the original coupling to match the new shaft configuration
– Reassembled and tested the unit, ensuring readiness for immediate installation
To ensure seamless delivery, the completed unit was hand-delivered by a Hayley branch representative straight to the customer’s site—just in time for production to restart on Monday morning.
